G5RV Junior

The G5RV Junior applies the G5RV principle at approximately half the full-size length.

HF Multibande Version réduite

Operating principle

A shorter doublet is combined with a balanced-line impedance-transforming section.

Dimensions and design

A common version uses about 15.5 metres of total wire and around 5 metres of balanced line, corrected for velocity factor.

Construction and tuning

Step 1

Cut two equal legs.

Step 2

Measure the balanced section accurately.

Step 3

Keep it away from metal.

Step 4

Install a choke before the coax.

Step 5

Use a tuner when required.

Step 6

Check feed-line losses on high-SWR bands.

Advantages

  • Reduced span.
  • Several HF bands.
  • Simple construction.
  • No traps.

Limitations

  • Less lower-band coverage.
  • Difficult impedance on some bands.
  • Tuner often required.
  • Possible coaxial loss.

History and origin

The G5RV Junior is a compact adaptation of Louis Varney’s G5RV for smaller properties.

Safety

The balanced section may carry high RF voltage and must remain clear.
